Scenthusiasm Scent School

Welcome to Scenthusiasm Scent School

This is the complete online introductory course to perfumery, created by award-winning perfumer Sarah McCartney. This is the one for beginners—or those who are near enough—who want to get stuck in and make real perfumery progress.

Why this is the perfect online course for budding perfumers

By the end of this course, you’ll:

  • Understand your materials and equipment.

  • Know how to measure and dilute.

  • Be able to follow formulas.

  • Most importantly, make your own perfume!

You’ll get two years of access to this course.

You can either rush through and get it all done in a week or two. Or you can take your time, test, tweak, and adjust - get to know your materials, what they do, and how they feel. This can’t be rushed, and it’s what makes a good perfumer.

This course isn’t designed to be done once. Go around again and again, each time trying and learning something new.

What’s in the course?

This course is packed with over 14 years of Sarah’s experience in the world of perfumery. Here’s what you’ll get:

  • Explainer films on the essentials of perfumery, and how to use your equipment and materials.

  • An in-depth look at 12 popular scent styles.

  • Step-by-step formulas you can follow and adjust to make your own scents.

  • A recommended materials list.

If you’re interested in this course, you’re probably already intrigued and excited by perfume making, but to make things even more interesting, Sarah shares some stories behind the fragrances you’re learning about.

When you’ve finished the first round, you’ll have a collection of perfumes made with your own hands. If you’ve ever wanted to explore the art of indie perfume making, this is where it all begins.

This course is for you if any of these sound familiar:

  • You’re intrigued by fragrances and want to know how they’re put together.

  • You’ve been working just with naturals and want to know how to use synthetics too.

  • You’ve read so much contradictory information it’s made your head spin.

  • You’ve been experimenting, but the results haven’t worked out the way you were hoping.

  • You suspect there must be more to it than a "notes pyramid," but you’re not sure how to find out.

  • You’ve already bought some materials and don’t want to waste them making mistakes.

If even one of these rings true, this is the perfect place to start!

About the Perfumer: Sarah McCartney

Sarah McCartney is an award-winning indie perfumer and the founder of 4160Tuesdays. Sarah set up Scenthusiasm because people ask her every day for help getting started in perfumery. She can help, but becoming an artisan perfumer is a challenge. If you're ready for an exciting challenge, this is the place to start. Sarah is well known for two things:

1. Making adventurous, award-winning fragrances. 4160Tuesdays fragrances are sold in some of the world's most original specialist scent shops, including Lucky Scent in LA and New York, and Perfumology in Philadelphia. She has also created fragrances for Sarah Baker, Black Cliff, Oxford Botanic Garden, the Courtauld Gallery, Google, Chivas, Samsung, and Hyundai.

2. Telling it the way it is, with a combination of enthusiasm and practicality. Sarah makes perfumes the way most indie companies do, with both natural materials and synthetics: mixed media. She chooses naturals when they are available, ethical, and sustainable, and uses biodegradable aromachemicals to help bring out the best from them.
